I’m an Electrical Engineer by degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I’ve worked in manufacturing facilities for the past 25+ years. I’ve completed countless projects, either complete internal builds (we did all the design, fab, build, install, and maintain) to hybrid projects working with equipment builders from around the world. I’ve seen “a lot”, and even though I’m the “Automation Guy”, I try to maximize the value in every project. What do I mean by that? I won’t try to put $30,000 controls on a machine that only requires simple inputs and outputs. Sometimes, a few switches, sensors, and the right outputs are all that is needed. A robotic arm would be great in every project, but the total cost of ownership is rarely calculated, just the up front cost. How reliable is the robot, tech support, product and process the arm is operating with and in. Can the process avoid downtime? If not, what spare parts are needed? Can the on-site maintenance department trouble-shoot?
